Burgers are a staple in our house and this is my favorite chicken burger recipe to make right now. It’s light and healthy and packed with Asian flavors. From the freshly grated ginger in the chicken patty to the hoisin mayonnaise spread, this is a perfect weeknight meal that will be sure to impress!
Ingredients:
Ground Chicken
If you can’t find ground chicken where you live you can use ground turkey in a pinch. I don’t like the flavor as much but it does work. Or I’ve tried grinding chicken in a food processor, the texture is a little different but it’s fine!
Ginger
I’m all about convenience but for this recipe, fresh ginger is needed. Using the dried ground ginger just won’t give you the same flavor or freshness. Take the extra minute and grate the ginger with a Microplane, or a grater, it’s worth it!
Sesame oil, Mirin, and Hoisin Sauce
You can usually find these ingredients at most grocery stores. But in case you can’t you can find them here:
Lettuce
I typically use romaine for this recipe, but we have also used hydroponic lettuce and bok choy and they both work well too. Just slice into thin ribbons by cutting the leaves crosswise and place them in a bowl. Adding the mirin and sesame oil makes this taste a bit like an Asian slaw on top of the burger. It’s a simple topping that adds so much flavor!
Bread crumbs
Use panko for this recipe, they provide the perfect texture. We like to use whole wheat panko crumbs when we can find them but regular panko works well too.
Hamburger Buns
Brioche or Potato buns are really delicious with this recipe.
How to make the Asian Chicken Burger
In another bowl combine the ground chicken, grated ginger, panko breadcrumbs, and half of the sesame oil. Season with salt and pepper. Form into 4 equal patties, and create a small divot in the center of each patty because they will puff up a little when you cook them. In a large cast-iron (or nonstick) pan heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil on medium-high heat until hot. Add the burger patties and cook for about 7 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Then transfer to a plate to rest.
While the patties are cooking, add the remaining sesame oil and the mirin to the bowl of romaine lettuce. Season with salt and pepper to taste and toss to coat. If you can’t find mirin, rice wine vinegar with a little sugar makes a good replacement.
If you want to toast the buns, do that now.
Once the chicken patties are golden brown, flip and cook the other side. These are lean chicken burgers so you may need to use a little bit of cooking spray in the pan.
How To Make Hoisin Mayonnaise
- In a small bowl add 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- Add 1/4 cup of mayonnaise and mix the two ingredients together.
- Taste and add salt and black pepper if needed.
If you’ve never tried this you need to try it ASAP! It is so rich and delicious on these chicken burgers.
Spread the mayonnaise mixture onto the top and bottom bun, dividing evenly. Place patties on top of the bottom bun and add the romaine lettuce mixture, and top with the dressed top bun.
Hoisin Chicken Burgers are a different way to prepare chicken for your family. It’s simple, has tons of flavor, and it’s sooo good!
