Does making your own mayonnaise sound complicated?  It’s actually very easy to make, and full of clean simple ingredients!  This basil version has so much more flavor than plain mayonnaise and is the perfect condiment for your next summer sandwich!

Ingredients

Egg – This is what emulsifies the mayo. If one egg isn’t enough to make it thick and creamy add another one into the mix and blend again.

Lemon Juice – lemon juice adds some acidity to balance out the mayonnaise and makes the flavor more of a lemon-basil mayonnaise which is so delicious!

Mustard – You don’t taste this but it adds great depth of flavor.

Avocado oil – has a nice neutral flavor and lets the basil flavor shine through

1/2 cup Fresh Basil – There must be fresh basil leaves in basil mayonnaise! Don’t use dried basil, as the results will not work without the fresh basil flavor.

Lemon Juice – lemon juice adds some acidity to balance out the mayonnaise.

Sea Salt – just a pinch to bring out the flavors. You can add fresh cracked black pepper, too if you like pepper.

How to Use Basil Mayonnaise

There are a ton of uses for basil mayo, and you can really use it like you would use any mayonnaise. Here are our favorite ways to use it.

Sandwich Spread – This is delicious on a simple turkey sandwich, a BLT, a club sandwich, an egg sandwich, really any sandwich! My favorite summertime sandwiches with basil mayo are a BLT or a tomato and lettuce sandwich.

Burger Spread – Take your burger game to the next level this summer by adding basil mayo! This would be perfect with my Turkey Avocado Burgers

Dipping Sauce – This is a great condiment and is delicious as a dip for fries, roasted potato wedges, sweet potato fries, grilled potatoes, grilled veggies, or tater tots to dip in.

Chicken Salad – I haven’t tried this yet, but I think this would be a delicious substitute for regular mayo in chicken salad – especially this recipe!

Topping for Fish – Basil mayo is delicious spread on grilled salmon or tilapia.  Bake cod with a little basil mayo, green onion, and parmesan spread on top before getting baked in the oven.

Potato Salad – this would be delicious used in a summer potato salad in place of regular mayonnaise!

Make Tartar Sauce  – Use this basil mayo as a base for a flavorful tartar sauce recipe

Basil Mayo Variations

This recipe is great as is, but here are some variation ideas if you want to try them!

Pesto Mayo – No fresh basil? You can make pesto mayo instead for a similar flavor! Simply replace the basil leaves with ¼ cup of pesto.

Try Other Favorite Fresh Herbs. If your herb garden is bursting this summer, you can use this mayo as a base for other variations of herb-flavored mayonnaise. Experiment with different flavors and see what you like!  Fresh cilantro, fresh parsley, or fresh dill, would all be delicious options to substitute for fresh basil.

Add a Clove of Garlic – If you like garlic, this will add a ton of extra flavor to the basil mayonnaise.  You could also add a little sprinkle of garlic powder for a more mild garlic flavor.  Onion powder would be good too!

FAQS

Do I have to use an immersion blender?

I find the immersion blender to be the easiest way to make this recipe but you can use a small food processor or a blender too.

What if My Mayo Isn’t Thick and Creamy?

Don’t worry! Add an extra egg to the jar and blend again. Once it is incorporated the mixture should thicken.

Does the recipe have to use avocado oil?

You can make this recipe with olive oil too.  It’s delicious but it definitely has a stronger flavor.  If you’re not a big fan of olive oil, avocado oil is the better choice.

Can I buy premade avocado mayonnaise and add the other ingredients?

Sure!  I like the Chosen Foods mayonnaise or Helmans and I have purchased this at Costco, Whole Foods, and Amazon.

How to store leftover basil mayonnaise

Keep leftovers in an airtight container for up to a week.  I like to store mine in a mason jar with a plastic screw top lid.
