Who doesn’t love a large bowl of popcorn?  It’s a great snack!  Garlic Parmesan Popcorn is a fun, savory twist on everyone’s favorite movie night, game day snack, or after-school snack. It’s easy to make by infusing the butter with fresh parsley and garlic powder, then tossing it with perfectly popped popcorn kernels and grated Parmesan. It tastes just like garlic bread!

IS POPCORN HEALTHY?

Popcorn is a whole grain food with 1 cup of popcorn (plain) having around 30 calories, 1.2 grams fiber and 6 grams carbs.  What can make it unhealthy are the toppings that it is tossed with.  A prepackaged bag of microwave popcorn can be full of preservatives, artificial flavors, and saturated fats.  I prefer to just pop my own popcorn and add my own simple toppings.  Some of our favorites are coconut oil, melted butter, or olive oil, and a little salt.  Nutritional yeast is also a delicious and healthy addition.

Making your own popcorn is so easy!  We love to use a Whirley pop like this:

This is our preferred method, the popcorn turns out so crispy and you can evenly distribute the oil while it’s cooking on the stove.

We also have used a microwave popcorn bowl like this:

But if you don’t want to store an extra item in your kitchen you can just use a pan on the stove.  It’s so simple…check out the instructions below:

How to Prepare popcorn on a stovetop

One way to make healthy popcorn at home is on the stovetop in a large pot with a heavy bottom and fitting lid. Start by heating a high-smoke-point oil (like coconut oil).

Use 1.5 tablespoons of oil per ¼ cup of kernels. Place 2 kernels in the middle of the pot and close the lid.

When these kernels start to pop the oil is hot enough. Add the other kernels, close the lid, and shake the pot to coat all the kernels with oil.

Tilt the lid just a little to let any steam escape so it won’t make the popcorn soggy. Keep shaking the pot about once in a while. Then when the kernels start popping, shake every 20 seconds.

Turn off the heat when the popping slows. Keep the lid on a bit until the popping stops, then remove the lid. Toss with the salt, and shake the pan again to evenly distribute. Then continue to dress and season the popcorn to your liking.
