Classic mashed potatoes get a healthier makeover with a little help from Greek yogurt!  Even though they are healthier, don’t let that fool you.  These homemade yogurt mashed potatoes are fluffy and so flavourful with a perfect creamy texture!  It’s actually our new preferred way to make mashed potatoes. They are just so good!!  The yogurt gives the potatoes a tangy flavor that tastes just like potatoes made with more decadent ingredients like cream cheese or sour cream.  They make for an easy, affordable, and delicious side dish that is the perfect complement for a weeknight meal, Thanksgiving dinner, or any other holiday dinner!

These healthy mashed potatoes use Greek yogurt to make the potatoes creamy and rich.

Creamy Greek yogurt is the perfect substitute for sour cream, cream cheese, half-and-half, or heavy cream. Your mashed potatoes will still be rich and flavorful, but you’ll have some added protein.  Add in some fresh chives, and sharp cheddar cheese, or top with gravy to punch up the flavor even more.

Ingredients for Greek Yogurt Mashed Potatoes

  • Russet potatoes
  • Plain Greek yogurt, make sure it’s plain and not flavored.

How to Make Greek Yogurt Mashed Potatoes

These healthier mashed potatoes are as easy to make as the classic recipe!

  1. Scrub and wash the potatoes, peel them, and cut them into similar-sized large chunks.
  2. Place the potatoes in a pot cover them with cold water and bring to a boil.
  3. Cook the potatoes until tender, about 15 – 20 minutes.
  4. When the potatoes are fork-tender, drain the water. Add the Greek yogurt, milk, salt, and green onions to the hot potatoes.
  5. Using a potato masher, an electric mixer, or my preferred method a Foley Food Mill, mash the potatoes to the desired consistency.

How to Keep Mashed Potatoes Warm

If you need to keep the creamy mashed potatoes warm until you plan on serving them, I recommend transferring them to a slow cooker with a lid that’s set to warm.

Or, you could transfer the mashed potatoes to a baking dish, cover the top tightly with foil, and place in a 200ºF oven until you’re ready to serve them.

How to Store Leftover Greek Yogurt Mashed Potatoes

If you have leftovers of these mashed potatoes with Greek yogurt, transfer them to an airtight container within 2 hours of serving and store them in the refrigerator.  When reheating if they are too thick, add a little milk to give them a more creamy consistency.

Variations

  • Add several cloves of roasted garlic when mashing the potatoes for Garlic Mashed Potatoes.
  • Try using red potatoes instead of russets, you could even leave the skin on.  Just make sure you clean them really well!
  • For a really low-fat option use non-fat Greek yogurt.  It’s not quite as creamy but it still tastes really good!
  • Top with extra toppings like cheddar cheese, green onions, and bacon bits to make loaded mashed potatoes.
  • Mix in chopped herbs like chives or parsley to add a little freshness to your mashed potatoes.

If you are a designated Side-dish Bringer for Thanksgiving, you should definitely be bringing these mashed potatoes to your gathering.  They travel really well and can be kept warm in a baking dish, cover the top tightly with foil, and place in a 200ºF oven until you’re ready to serve them.
