How to make a classic Old Fashioned with simple syrup.
This was the signature drink of J’s 40th birthday party last March. He has accumulated a wonderful group of friends over the years and they gathered on our patio for food, drinks, cigars, and great conversation. It was a wonderful night! I set out a ton of food, desserts, and all of the ingredients and instructions for making Old Fashioneds and Gin and Tonics. The Old Fashioned was a big hit, so I thought I would share our version of this classic cocktail with you.

Old Fashioned Made With Simple Syrup
How to make a classic old-fashioned with simple syrup.
Servings 1 cocktail
Ingredients
- 2.5 oz Bourbon like Elijah Craig or Evan Williams Single Barrel
- 1 stripe Orange Zest using a vegetable peeler
- 2 teaspoons simple syrup or you can use a sugar cube and muddle it
- 3 dashes Aromatic Bitters like Angostura
- Garnish with a Dark Morello Cherry or Maraschino
Instructions
- In the bottom of a glass, pour in simple syrup and add three dashes of bitters.
- Add a block of ice and 2.5 oz of bourbon, swirl.
- Peel a stripe of orange zest, avoiding the bitter white pith of the orange
- Fold or twist the zest near the rim of the glass to release the oils and then add it to the glass.
- Garnish with a cherry.
